Glynn Shurbet

A kind, gentle man joined his loved ones in
Heaven on Sunday, February 7, 2010. G. Lynn Shurbet was a
beloved son, a devoted brother, a loving husband, a wonderful father,
and an adoring grandfather. He was born February 3, 1928, in Lockney,
Texas. He was the son of Deskin Hunt Shurbet and Ethel Ewing Shurbet. He
graduated from Tulia High School in 1945.
Lynn began his
college studies at Baylor University and graduated from the University
of Texas with a degree in physics. Following graduation, he moved to New
York to work with his uncle Maurice “Doc” Ewing at the Lamont Geological
Observatory at Columbia University. During his career there Lynn
traveled the world on Navy submarines, using a gravity meter to make
charts of the ocean floor. Many of his charts are still in use today.
While working
at Lamont Lynn met Joanna Harcourt Healey. They were married on Feb. 6,
1953 in Nyack, New York. Their first and second daughters, Julia Lynn
and Nancy Joanna were born in New York. Lynn and his young family then
moved to Lubbock to be closer to his Texas family. There he obtained
his Masters and PhD from Texas Tech and was a professor in the
mathematics department. Two more daughters, Stephanie Hope and Jane
Evelyn, were born in Lubbock.
Lynn enjoyed hunting for arrowheads,
polishing rocks and was a member of the Lubbock Gem and Mineral
Society.
After
Joanna’s death in 1980, Lynn married Pat Gray on December 3, 1987. When
Pat’s career as a mechanical engineer took her to Alvin, Texas, he
retired from Texas Tech. He and Pat enjoyed going to garage sales. He
repaired antique jewelry and made beautiful necklaces. Lynn also enjoyed
working outside, trimming trees at their new home in Edna, Texas. When
his health began to fail Pat retired to take care of him. Due to her
loving care and the many kindnesses shown by her family, he enjoyed many
more years. His daughters think their daddy was the luckiest man on
earth, to have had the fortune to marry their mother, and then to marry
Pat.
G. Lynn
Shurbet is survived by his wife of twenty two years, Pat; his daughters
Julia Shurbet, Nancy Krebbs, Stephanie Shurbet, and Jane Leger,
stepdaughter Donna Kessler, stepson Justin Grey; and eight
grandchildren, Michael Benjamin Sandlin, Alexander Lynn Sandlin,
Jonathan Lee Krebbs, Christopher Lynn Krebbs, Kaitlin Jane Krebbs,
Matthew Joseph Leger, Nicholas Shurbet Leger, and Joanna Hope Leger. He
was preceded in death by his beloved older brother, Deskin Hunt “Jidge”
Shurbet. Lynn is survived by his two loving sisters, Joy Miller and
Nancy Hilburn, and six nieces and nephews.
A memorial
service will be held on Wednesday, February 10, at 1:00 pm at St. John’s
United Methodist Church, 1501 University, in Lubbock, Texas. Friends are
invited to 3112 20th Street after the services. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests memorials to the National Arbor Foundation
www.arborday.org Trees in Memory or Hospice of Lubbock, 1102 Slide
Road, Lubbock, Texas, 79416.
The family
would like to extend a special thanks to the entire staff at
Emeritus/Quail Ridge for their tender care of Lynn during the last year
of his life.
In
accordance with his wishes, Lynn’s ashes will be scattered at the family
land up Seep Canyon, Weed, New Mexico.
