Ina Mae Baird
A memorial
service to celebrate the life of Ina Mae Baird will be held at 10:30
a.m., Monday, January 25, 2010 at First Christian Church, Hodges Chapel,
2323 Broadway with Dr. Michael Passmore and Reverend Kim Clowe
officiating, directed by Sanders Funeral Home. Services will follow at
Quitaque. She departed this life on January 20, 2010.
Ina Mae Long Baird was born at Paducah, TX September
5, 1915, graduated Roaring Springs High School, attended Baylor College
for Women, Texas Tech and graduated from West Texas State at Canyon.
She taught school at Folley, Flomot, and Quitaque, Texas. She and Jimmy
Baird were married in 1939 and lived in Quitaque 37 years, where he had
an oil agency. Her three sons were born and grew up, James M. Baird,
Thomas H. Baird and Michael L. Baird. Ina Mae was always active in any
community she ever lived in. She taught a Young Married Women’s Sunday
School Class in Quitaque for 22 years while she taught their children in
public school. Quitaque Chapter 878 was organized as she was first
Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star.
They retired after living at Quitaque 37 years and
moved to Mesa, Arizona then on to San Diego before moving back to Texas
and Lubbock in 1983 where they found a home and church family at First
Christian Church. Here she was active in Sunday School as teacher, as
member of Harvesters Sunday Class, a member of CWF, of several Bible
Study Groups, Keenagers and belonged to Bluebonnet Bridge Club.
She was preceded in death by parents, Tom E. and
Ethel Long of Roaring Springs and Matador, two brothers who died in
World War II, T.E. Long, Jr. and Billy Long, a brother Charles Long of
Roaring Springs, a sister, Wreathel Persons of College Station, her
husband Jimmy in 1993, grandson Nelson Baird of Keller and son James M.
Baird and wife, Lavona Mae Lewis Baird of Lubbock.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas H. Baird wife,
Glendell Morrison Baird and son, Mark Baird, granddaughters, Laura Baird
and two children Abbie and Glenn Waldron, AR, son, Michael L. Baird of
Lubbock, grandson James G. Baird, wife, JoAnn Braith Baird and two sons
Johnny and Charley of Irving, grandson Bruce Baird of Carrolton and
daughter, Tabatha, Precious nieces and nephews, and many dear friends
from churches where they lived and those she taught who still keep in
touch. Many of these became as family to her. Of family pier group
only two cousins remain; Elwanda Godfrey Suchie of Ft. Worth and Dan
Harmonson of Midland. In August of 2009 she celebarated the birth of her
great-great grandson, Logan Thomas.
Her love and enthusiasm for living, the
encouragement she always gave others and her wonderful sense of humor
will be missed.
