Myrtle
Ara Cothrun was born April 27, 1912, in Junction, Texas. She was the
fourth of six children born to Ebbie Lee Roberts Cothrun and William
Arthur Cothrun. She grew up in Northeastern Oklahoma and at the age of
eight returned to the panhandle of Texas with her family in covered
wagons. Growing up during the Great Depression was evident in the way
she lived her life and loved her family and friends. She married James
Russell Hough in Alexandria, Louisiana, on December 15, 1946.
During
her lifetime, she had the opportunity to enjoy living in many areas of
the United States and Mexico, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Tennessee, Illinois, California, and Mexico City. Through her travels
she made many lifelong friends. She settled in Lubbock in 1964.
Scooter, as she was nicknamed by friends early in her adult life, was
gifted with an entrepreneurial talent. She owned and operated many
different businesses, including gas stations, restaurants, hotel coffee
shops, a photography studio, and real estate/rental properties.
She
came to Lubbock as a Dietician with the Dormitory Food Service at Texas
Tech University and she continued in that position for two years,
leaving to join Lubbock Independent School District as a Supervisor of
Public School Cafeterias. She remained in that position until her
retirement in 1978. She continued to manage her real estate properties
until her death.
She
enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends in Ruidoso,
New Mexico. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in
Lubbock.
The
greatest joy in Myrtle's life was her family. She is preceded in death
by her parents; three brothers, Floyd Cothrun, Cecil Cothrun, and Ray
Cothrun; and two sisters, Gladys Young (Mrs. Tiffin) and Mary Elizabeth
Cothrun. Her survivors include her daughter, Jamie Biggers and husband
Sammy, of Lubbock; granddaughter, Cecilee Echols and husband Daniel, of
Lubbock; grandson, Carter Biggers and wife Mandy, of Iowa City, Iowa;
and great-grandchildren, Isaac and Luke Echols; and Palmer, Harrison and
Annabelle Biggers. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom
she loved very much.
Myrtle's family would like to thank her caregivers Dora Esparza, Elda
Fuhrmann, and Carolyn West for their kindness and compassion.
Visitation for family and friends will be Monday January 25th at Sanders
Funeral Home in Lubbock from 7-8 p.m.
