Alicia Mata

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Alicia Reyes Mata, aloving and devoted wife, mother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on August 26, 2020. Alicia was born on October 20, 1957, in Robstown, TX to the late Jesus and Adelina Reyes. She graduated as a Robstown, Cotton Picker and was involved in the drill team throughout high school. She eloped and married her sweetheart and the love of her lifeof 42 years, David Mata Sr. She was a devoted mother to four children and a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren. She spent 20 + years working for the Plainview Independent School District starting as a bus driver and retiring as a librarian at Lakeside Elementary School. After the passing of her father she relocated to spend time with her late mother Adelina Reyes. Alicia’s greatest love was her family and her children were very proud to call her mom. She was the toughest and strongest “momma bear” anyone has ever known. She treasured her children and would embrace every moment with them. She was at every Plainview Bulldogs basketball gameand little league baseball games supporting her son’s. Also attended every event and function of the Plainview Bulldogs marching band supporting her daughter. She continued to show her love and support to all her grand babies by attending their birthday celebrations, sporting, and school events. She always looked forward to her grand babies visits over the summer and to spending time grocery shopping with her oldest granddaughter who attended college nearby. Alicia was loved by many, many people including all her children’s childhood friends. Her home was always warm and welcoming to everyone that entered. She loved to cook for her family and shared her love for food from making the best breakfast potatoes to her famousmeatloaf and brisket. Thanksgiving dinner was the highlight of the year as her family waited in anticipation for the very special holiday and family time. Every morning at 5:30 am she made sure breakfast was made for the love of her life and always ensured he ended the day with a home cooked meal. Alicia also loved to love on people. Her smile and laughter would draw people near to her, however those that knew her well knew not to mistake her love and kindness with her honesty. She always told you the truth even if it was not what you wanted to hear. Her words of encouragement, wisdom and comfort is what kept her entire family grounded. She was the glue that held us all together. Besides always making her family a top priority she enjoyed spending time going to garage sales, finding the best bargains and shopping for her grand babies. She also loved to attend family celebrations and dance to her favorite song, “neon moon” with her sweetheart. Alicia will also be always remembered as the best mother in law a girl could ask for. She was strong, loving, supportive, loyal, and always present. We all knew that no matter what we were deeply loved by her. Her passing leaves a whole that will never be filled. She will forever be missed until we see her again. She will be sorely missed and survived by her loving husband, David Mata Sr. Her four beloved children David Jr and wife Eunice. Sarah Jessica, Andrew Scott and wife Kristin, and Martin Eugene and wife Desiree. Grandchildren: Ariana, Derrick, Briana, Ryanna, Domryn, David III, Davian, Luke, Daniel, and Mya Joe. Brothers: Alfonso, George, Jerry, Pedro Herrera Sr. Frank Herrera. Sisters: Alma Mata, Mary Gonzales, Delia Morales, and Margarita Montero. Alicia is preceded in death by her late parents Jesus and Adelina Reyesand brother Juan Herrera Sr. The family of Alicia Reyes Mata will celebrate her life of 62 years on Friday, September 4, 2020. The funeral service will be held at Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock, TX at 10:30am with Pastor Ruben Gonzales officiating. Rosary will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 7:00-8:00pm.
