Brian Edward Murray

Brian Murray, 59, passed away during the evening of Monday, November 14. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he moved to Lubbock in 1974. Brian attended Texas Tech University and there met and married the love of his life, Lynne Hart Murray on April 12, 1980. After graduating from Texas Tech, he went on to attend the Texas Tech University School of Law, and graduated in 1982. He stayed in Lubbock and practiced law around the South Plains. Brian dedicated himself to criminal defense work, though he maintained a general practice. He served twice as President of the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and believed strongly in representing the indigent. His two oldest sons decided to follow in his footsteps, and become lawyers. His oldest son, Brendan, died during his second year of law school. Patrick graduated and began practicing law under his father’s mentorship. He also had a soft spot for the deaf community, oftentimes providing pro bono representation for them, because he was keenly aware of their struggles because of his own experience with his youngest son, Roarke. Friends and family knew Brian for his steadfast loyalty, his wit, and often irreverent sense of humor. He may have appeared gruff at first, but quickly opened up and would tell a joke with a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin. He never went anywhere he didn’t recognize someone and could strike up a conversation anywhere, and be at least somewhat knowledgeable on the topic. Brian was an unabashed, proud Democrat, and would let anyone and everyone around him be aware of his viewpoints, wherever he went. Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Anne and Paul Murray; his son Brendan; and his brother Hugh. He is survived by his wife Lynne; his sons Patrick and Roarke; siblings Daniel (Lisa) Murray of The Plains, Ohio, Teresa (Rick) Paulette of Olympia, Washington, and James (Gertrude) Murray of Gahanna, Ohio; his mother-in-law Marie Hart of Levelland, Texas; brother in law John (Bobbie) Hart of Bellevue, Washington, and sister in law Beth Hart of Lubbock, Texas; He is also survived by many nieces, nephews including Grant Murray and Nickolas Hart of Lubbock. He is also survived by countless friends, colleagues, and chosen family. Visitation at Sanders Funeral home begins at 5 p.m. on November 18, and a Rosary will follow at 6. Funeral Mass will be Saturday November 19 at 11 a.m. Holy Spirit Catholic Church, officiated by Bishop Placido Rodriguez, Father Rudolf Crasta, and Father Jonathan Phillips. Burial to follow at City of Levelland Cemetery. .
