Evonne Cain

Gwendolyn Evonne Cain of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on June 20, 2024, at the age of 89. Evonne was born in Will's Point, TX in 1934 to Henry and Velma Preston. She was part Cherokee Indian, all around purveyor of awesomeness, great defender of those she loved, and most admired for being an incredibly strong women during a time when it was hard to be a strong woman. Growing up on a farm in Wilson, TX, Evonne learned the value of hard work and perseverance at a young age, qualities that she carried with her throughout her life. She was one of four children and always cherished the time spent with her family, who worked together to overcome any challenges that came their way. She enjoyed athletics and was not only on the Volleyball and Basketball Team, but a cheerleader as well. She was a friend to everyone and always wore a smile. A quality that won her the title of Homecoming Queen. Evonne lived in various states, including California, Arizona, and Fort Worth, before settling in Lubbock in 1981 with her late husband Darrell. Throughout her career as an Insurance Agent at Mutual of Omaha, Evonne always prioritized her clients' needs as if they were her own family. Her dedication and commitment to serving others truly set her apart in her profession. Evonne was preceded in death by: her husband, Darrell Cain; her father, Henry Preston; her mother, Velma Preston; her brothers, Harold and Dwayne Preston; her sister, Pat Walker; her son, Michael Jacobs; and her daughter, Lisa Jacobs. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Evonne found great joy and comfort in her church family at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. Her faith was an integral part of her life and brought her immense happiness and peace. A visitation be held at Sanders Funeral Home on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 3:00-4:30 pm. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m at Peaceful Gardens Cemetery. Evonne was a remarkable woman who touched many lives with her kindness, generosity, and spirit. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for the love and light she brought into the lives of others.
