Hayden Hegdal

Hayden Glyn Hegdal, 77, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Covenant Specialty Hospital. Hayden has had numerous health problems over the years, had fought hard to win the battles, however, this last one proved to be too much for him. The family would like to thank everyone at University Medical Center, Heritage Oaks Rehabilitation and Covenant Specialty Hospital for the care and concern shown to him over the past couple of months. He loved all of his nurses, aides and the staff and was so grateful for their help and compassion. Hayden was born on Christmas day in 1933 to Blanche and Martin Hegdal in Borger, Texas. After spending his youth in Borger, he joined the Army and was stationed in Alaska. He later relocated to Lubbock, Texas and began a career in home building. He was known as a prominent home builder in Lubbock and was a member of the West Texas Home Builders Association. He loved trying new things. He had a passion for researching his Norwegian heritage, and was fortunate enough to travel to Norway with his good friend, Weldon Wines a few years ago and found many distant relatives that he enjoyed keeping in touch with until his death. He was one of the first satellite TV salesmen in the Lubbock area, an avid sailor, had a restaurant in Idaho, and a nightclub in Borger, Texas. What he loved most, other than family, was music, particularly Country music. He was a gifted guitarist, bassist and singer, as well as writing and composing his own material. He played with many area musicians, most recently with Sammy Naylor, Jody McNitt and Carl Ayers. Hayden enjoyed playing every chance he got. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Blanche Hegdal, one sister, Natalie Hegdal and 5 brothers, Martin, James, Jackie, Joseph & Robert Hegdal. He is survived by 4 daughters, Natalie Gilbreth and husband David, Valerie Hearon and husband Dean, and Glynda Robison, all of Lubbock, and Holly Mayes of Los Angeles, CA. Additionally, 6 grandsons, Dustin Gilbreth, Deonne Hearon, Hayden Hearon & Nathan Robison, all of Lubbock, Aric Hegdal of Los Angeles, CA and, PFC Jonathan Hegdal, currently deployed to Afghanistan. 4 granddaughters, Shannon Crittenden, Victoria Dutton, Alexandria Hegdal and Michaela Mayes, all of Los Angeles, CA. 1 great-grandson, Cory Hegdal of Lubbock. He is also survived by his beloved sisters-in-law, Joan Hegdal, of Lubbock, Texas, and Shirley Hegdal, of San Angelo. He has numerous nieces and nephews and extended family that he loved and cherished. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 2:00 pm. at Sanders Funeral Chapel.
