Isabel Rapier

Isabel Rapier was a wise, witty, wonderful and well-loved mother of five, grandmother of ten, and great-grandmother of six little ones, with another on the way. Born Isabel Ann Morehouse in Houston, she went to high school in Midland and attended Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women’s University) in Denton, before transferring to Texas Tech, the move that really changed her life. At Tech she studied architecture and met architecture/structural engineering student Bob Rapier. They were married in 1946 and made their life together in Lubbock. Isabel got her pilot’s license and flew Bob to business meetings around the Southwest. She was a member of the Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots. Isabel was a vital member of Lubbock’s civic life. She and Bob were among the first franchisees of Schlotzsky’s nationwide, owning and operating the four delis in town. As President of the company, Isabel was on the Board of Directors of the Lubbock Restaurant Association and was awarded the Roy Bass Humanitarian Award For Business Ethics. She was on the Lubbock delegation to a Congressional conference on small business held in Washington, DC. Isabel was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Parish (whose church was designed and built by Bob’s firm, Brasher, Goyette and Rapier). She was also a member of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock Finance Committee, the Hillcrest Ladies Golf Association, the Rose Ladies for St. Mary’s Hospital, the Lubbock Women’s Club, the WOES (Wives of Engineers), the Order of Martha Bridge Club, and the Merry-Go-Round Dance Club. Isabel is survived by her son John Rapier and his wife Kathryn of McKinney, daughter Mary Rapier of Lubbock, son Tom Rapier and his wife Roberta of Los Angeles, son Joe Rapier and his wife Stacy of Lubbock, daughter Liz Lonngren and her husband Chris of Lubbock – plus all those grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother George Morehouse, and sister Marian Stensrud. Isabel’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Carillon for their expert caregiving and loving attention over the years. A visitation for Isabel will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary, 7:00p.m., at Sanders Funeral Home, Thursday, March 13th. The funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Cathedral at 4011 54th St. on Friday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m.. Graveside services will follow immediately at Resthaven Cemetery, 5740 West 19th Street.
