James Reavis Chauncey

James “Jim” Reavis Chauncey, 74, of Lubbock passed away July 10, 2015. Jim was born to Mildred and Arnold Chauncey on March 14, 1941, in Lubbock. He lived his first five years on the family farm in Shallowater and then later moved with his family to Lubbock. Jim graduated from Monterey High School in 1959 and from Texas Polytechnic College (Texas Tech) in 1965 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA). Jim loved Texas Tech. After graduation he worked as a dorm supervisor for three years while completing graduate studies. In 1972, he went to work for the Texas State Comptroller’s Office in Dallas. He transferred back to Lubbock that same year and married the love of his life, Kathy Beavers. He worked for the State Comptroller for 24 years. After retiring in 1996, he worked with his friend, Kilmer Key, in the specialty advertising business. Jim and Kathy were married for 43 years and had a son, Matt. Jim’s life was characterized by his love for his family and his love for Jesus Christ. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1980 at Southwest Baptist Church. He served in the Deacon Ministry at Southwest Baptist, Calvary Baptist, and Southcrest Baptist. He served not only as a Deacon, but also as Sunday School teacher and director, greeter, and usher. He was a member of the Gideons and the Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, son Matt and wife Kami, grandson Jack of Austin, brother Fred and wife Carol, niece Nicole and husband, Jason of Dallas. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Marilyn Beavers of Conway, Arkansas, and Ramona Beavers of Harrison, Arkansas. Jim has many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved. Services for Jim will be held at Southcrest Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Visitation will be held at 11 am and funeral services at 1 pm. Burial will be at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Brother Jerry Wilson will officiate assisted by Rodney Richardson. Deacons of Southcrest Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Southcrest Baptist Church building program, Southcrest Christian School, Gideons, or a charity of your choice.
