Jerry Smith

Jerry Smith passed away January 8, 2016 after a short illness with family by his side. Jerry was born December 28, 1935 to Brad and Lula Smith in Howland, Texas. He moved with his parents to Lubbock, Texas. He met and married Mary Temple in February 1957 and had 4 children. He and Mary were married for 58 years her she was given the wings of an angel in 2013. Jerry went to work for Fenner Tubbs Chrysler, moving up from parts runner up to Service Manager for 36 years until he retired, and then worked at other things through his life until finally retiring for good. “The Need For Speed”. It started when he was a teen watching his older brother Bill racing that he was bitten by the Go-Fast bug. He would race anything that he thought would be fun. Go karts, motorcycles, dirt track cars and drag racing. This culminated to him driving a brand new 1962 Max Wedge Plymouth, and then a 63 Max Wedge sponsored by Fenner Tubbs. Then he was bitten by the dragster bug. This culminated with him driving the Buck’s Irrigation Top Fuel dragster in the late 60’s with his friends Prentiss Cunningham and Carl Jones. But mostly, and more importantly, he was a good husband and father. Survivors include a son, Randy Smith; his wife, Cindy of Lubbock; and their children, Amy and her husband Shaun Borden of Longview, and Branden and his wife Leah of Hale Center; son, Gary Smith; his wife, Dianna of Lubbock; and their children, Christy and her husband Micheal Terry of Lubbock, and their children, Ethan, Aubrey, and Serenity, and Kelsey and her daughter Autumn of Lubbock, and Heather; her husband, Michael Schleeper of Moore, Okla., and their children, Keyton and Kaden; daughter, Rhonda and her husband Scot Pate, and their children, Michael Pate and and his wife Morgan, and their daughters Aimee and Mary of Mountain View, Calif., Breayon Scruggs of Lubbock; Michelle and her husband Joshua Lowe of Amarillo, Brock Scruggs and fiancé Jhenna Broussard and their son Tatum of Lubbock, and Byron Scruggs of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years and mother of their children, Mary Smith; a son Ronnie Lynn Smith; his brother Bill Smith, and his sisters Louise Weehunt and Francis Flowers. We will all miss you here Dad, but will see you and Mom holding hands there in Heaven!
