Kay Abney

Kay Peterson Abney went home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2025 at the age of 77. She was born on April 20, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas to William Buford Peterson and Etta Margarette (Margie) Shelton Peterson. She graduated from Morton High School in 1966. Kay attended South Plains College where she received an Associate Degree in May, 1968. While at South Plains she met the love of her life and best friend, Harold Abney. They were married on December 28, 1968. After their wedding Kay and Harold moved to Oceanside, California where Harold was stationed in the U.S. Navy. She returned to Plainview, Texas in August, 1969 to resume her education at Wayland Baptist University with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned her teaching certification. Kay taught elementary school in Plainview, Frenship and Lockney. She retired from teaching in May, 2008 after 20 years. She also was a subsitute teacher in the communities where she lived. Kay and Harold were blessed with two children - Koby Daniel Abney and Kristen D'Netta Mclendon, six grandchildren, two bonus grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece, Stephanie Peterson and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clint and Lynda Abney. She is survived by her husband, Harold; her children - Koby (Marla) Abney; Kristen (Michael) Mclendon; her six grandchildren - Jackson (Annie) Abney, Joseph (Meagan) Allen, Carter (Emily) Abney, Nickalos (Brianna) Mclendon, Faith Mclendon, and Rebecca Abney; and two bonus grandchildren - Blayne (Mackenzie) Childers and BrynLeigh Childers; great-grandchildren - Henry Abney and Nayeli Mclendon; her brother and sister-in law - Morris and Marilyn Peterson. She is also survived by two nephews - Scott Peterson and Stephen Peterson and family, several cousins and many friends. A memorial Service will be held on August 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Bacon Heights Baptist Church, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Kay's life. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place at Sanders Funeral Home on August 17, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, allowing loved ones to share their memories and express their condolences. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Singing Women of Texas, West Chapter.
