Peggy Darlene Young

Peggy Benton Young, 89 of Lubbock was called by her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 20, 2023 after a short illness. Peggy was born on February 6, 1934 in Pinebluff Arkansas to Winston and Idabell Benton. After graduating high school, Peggy was hired as a professional draftsman designing transformers. She was only one of the very few women in that profession at that time. She was coaxed by her best friend to go on a blind date with a handsome soldier who turned out to be the love of her life. She married James S Young on March 16, 1956 in Pine Bluff. James' career as a fire safety engineer with the state of Texas brought them back to his hometown in Lubbock. they had 2 children, a daughter Cyndy and a son, Jay. Peggy was a talented artist, winning multiple awards and recognition's statewide. She was active in the Lubbock Art Association, where she held several offices, the Lubbock Watercolor Society, and participated with the Lubbock arts festival, regularly doing live demonstrations. She also was a talented teacher, and opened her own art studio in the mid 70s and continued teaching until she retired in 1991. Peggy was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church until her health became such that she couldn't attend regularly. Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Cyndy Johnson and companion Kyle Hedgcoth, her brother Ben Benton and wife Glenda along with their daughter, Jesse Benton. A sister Molly Lynn Hale. 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Tia Johnson and children Abbi Cortinaz and Gus Johnson. Taryn Stanley, husband Cole and children Isabeau and Sunny Stanley. Alex Johnson and wife Claire, children Hailyn and Jack Ireton and James Johnson. Additional bonus great grandchildren include Maddie Cortinaz Thetford and husband Clinton. Lexi, Isaiah and Kadenze Cortinaz of Andrews, Texas. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, James S Young and son, James Benton Young. Parents Winston and Idabell Benton and a cousin David Gibson. Memorial services will be held at Sanders Funeral Home Chapel on November 6, 2023 at 10:30 AM followed by graveside services at Resthaven Memorial Park.
