Sara Jo Mitchell

Sara Jo Mitchell, 82 of Lubbock, Texas entered Heaven on December 23, 2022. She was born on September 18, 1940 in Maud Ok, to Jack and Rosie Wallace. Sara married Davy Jerrell Mitchell on January 29, 1961 in Morton, Texas in the First Baptist Church. The two were married for 60 years. Sara had a love for children of all ages. She was passionate about education and reading. As a young girl, she loved to sing and dance. She spent many college nights in the SUB at Texas Tech. She loved to fellowship with friends over coffee and she enjoyed working in her yard. She loved mowing at the family horse barn and the smell of fresh cut grass. Horses have been a part of Sara's life from a young age. The smell of horses especially brought a smile to her face and warmed her heart. She taught school in Colorado for 15 years and she taught at Bayless Elementary in Lubbock, Texas for 23 years. Sara attended Eastern New Mexico University and she graduated from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 1963. She and her husband, Davy, have owned the Outdoorsman in Lubbock for 45 years. Sara Jo had a passion for singing and was a member of the Sweet Adelines Show Chorus for several years. She was also a member of the Lubbock Retired Teachers Association where she served as secretary. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and a member of the First Baptist Church in Morton and in Lubbock, Texas. She cherished her time with her grandsons and she loved every moment she got to spend with her granddaughter. Loved ones include daughters Wendy (Paul) Moats and Jenny Altman; grandsons, Dusty and Dillon Moats; granddaughter, Ellie Altman; brother, Ronnie (Sandra) Wallace; and sister-in-law, Rocky Wilson. Proceeded in death by her husband, Davy Mitchell; her parents; her little brother, John Silas (Sparky); and her stepdad, George Smith. Family visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home Wednesday, January 04, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 04, 2023 in Sanders Memorial Chapel with Josh Reglin officiating. Private family graveside services will follow in the Morton Cemetery.
