A celebration of the life of Elaine Atkinson, 79, of Lubbock, Texas will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 24, 2020 in Sanders Memorial Chapel with Rev Richard Grubbs and Selwyn Smith officiating. A webcast of services will be available as well as our online guest book. Elaine was born June 18, 1940 in Kilgore, TX to J.D. and Margaret Atkinson and passed from this life on April 18, 2020. She graduated from Corsicana High School in 1958. Elaine then moved to Lubbock at the age of seventeen to attend Texas Tech University where she earned her Bachelors in Advertising Art & Design in 1963. She would go on to work for Tech Press while completing her education with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts-Technical Theater in 1987. Elaine was a freelance illustrator and graphic designer for over 30 years. Elaine was an accomplished illustrator of children's books; her lively characters and colorful pallet made children's books come to life. Many people knew her by her creative signature MissElaineous and have appreciated her work in a variety of settings. Elaine is survived by sisters, Rita Barnes and husband (Bill) and Mary Whitener and husband (Randy); nephew, Jerry Barnes and wife, Celeste and their children, Radlyn and Elijah Barnes; niece Toni Smith and husband (Selwyn) and their children, Mikayla, Mariah and Caleb Smith Preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Margaret Atkinson. Elaine had an insatiable desire for learning and one of her favorite things to study next to art was the Bible. Her love for Christ guided her life and dictated how she conducted herself and treated her friends and family. Anyone who knew Elaine experienced her devotion for people, her heart for animals and giving spirit. Elaine loved to capture the beauty of God's creation through photography, vibrant sketches and watercolor paintings. She was often found cheering on her Red Raiders or the New York Giants surrounded by friends. Elaine will be remembered for her sharp wit and contagious personality. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Meals on Wheels or the Humane Society.
