Joan Sherman Womack

October 24, 1931 - May 5, 2022

Joan Womack, 90, of Lubbock, Texas passed away May 5, 2022. Joan was born October 24, 1931, in Breckenridge, TX to Joe Stewart and Georgia McDonald. Joan Stewart grew up being raised by two separate set of parents. Mother was in Abilene and her Father in Lubbock, so she lived a very interesting life adjusting to a different schools and atmospheres every year as well as a different home life and it made her a real "people" person. She has always enjoyed people and she has always loved the Lord! While back in Abilene, she got a job at the Dixie Pig carhopping on roller skates! This is where she met the love of her life Raymond Sherman! Well he asked her out on a date to attend a dance and the rest is history! They danced all throughout life! They moved to Lubbock and got married in 1949 and soon after, had 4 children and made a home out west of New Deal! Joan loved being a wife and mother and was the best at both! They joined New Deal Baptist where all the kids grew up in church and she taught Sunday school for over 60 years! She was always at every ball game or event New Deal schools had, supporting all of her kids. Fun fact: in 1953 Joan was saved at a Billy Graham Crusade that came to West Texas! Joan loved her family, friends, and community and was always lending a hand where she could and she loved to cook and was wonderful at it. Always cooking for the entire family every Sunday without fail! She volunteered for years with Meals on Wheels and ironically she became a recipient years later and loves that organization. Joan was always busy doing something so when the kids got older she went to school and got her LVN license, she was fascinated with Nursing. "Nannie" became her grandmother name and she had 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and was just about at the end of this month to become a great-great grandmother! Raymond passed after being married for 40 years in 1990 and she went to work at Cardiology Associates in Lubbock and made many lifelong friendships there. Years later she met Dewey Womack and married and they spent the next 12 years together enjoying each other's companionship and traveling until his passing in 2007. In her later years she just soaked up being the greatest mom, grandmother and friend that loved life and everyone in it! Loved ones include son Joey Sherman and his wife Vicki of Lubbock, TX; daughter Patti Scarbrough and husband Monte of Lubbock, TX; daughter Debbie of Lubbock, TX; sisters Elva Townsend and Mary Stewart, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with countless family and friends. Preceded in death by her husbands Raymond Sherman followed by Dewey Womack, sister Pauline Stewart, father Joe and step mother Louise Stewart, mother Georgia McDonald step father Roy Rodgers, brother Leon Rodgers, and son Kelly Raymond Sherman. Visitation will be at Monterey Baptist Church Monday, May 09, 2022, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A celebration of her life will be 1:00 PM Monday, May 9, 2022, in Monterey Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Brown officiating. Graveside services will follow in City of Lubbock Cemetery.
