Melvin James Mitchell

April 28, 1950 - January 5, 2022

Melvin James Mitchell, 71, of Lubbock, Texas passed away January 5, 2022. Melvin was born April 28, 1950, in Lubbock, TX to Annie Doris and Maurice Washington. Melvin was the second eldest of eight children. He was taught by his mother to put his faith in Christ and was baptized at an early age. He expressed his love for God through song and was a member of the quartet group The Wayside Travelers of Lubbock Texas. Melvin was also a member of 20th and Birch Church of Christ and sung in the choir. Melvin graduated from Estacado High School in 1968. Having been trained in electrical technology while in high school, Melvin was quickly employed by Brandon and Clark Electric Company as one of the first African Americans ever hired as a motor winding generator technician. Melvin also worked for many years at Lubbock Electric Company as a supervisor over the winding department. Melvin was a very hard worker and business oriented. He retired from working for the electric company and started his own business; "Mitchell Janitorial Service", which he created and successfully managed for years along with his wife Ida Faye Mitchell. Melvin had a big heart and loved helping others. He loved to fish, loved working in the yard and loved mentoring young men. Melvin was very family oriented and loved spending time with his grandchildren. His smile and joking manner were infectious and will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him. He leaves to cherish his memories; his devoted wife Ida Faye Mitchell, three daughters Kimberly (Jasper), Rikki, Madalyn and a son Joey all of Lubbock, TX; three sisters Jocelyn McKenzie of Irving, TX, Tracy Bell (Jerry) of Garland, TX, Denise (Ian) Davis of Buda TX; three brothers, Arlanders "Pecos" Mitchell SR. (Betty) of Garland, TX, Gerald Hayes of Garland, TX; Mark Davis of Houston, TX, an aunt, Ruby Giddens of Lithonia, GA, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers. He was preceded in death by Annie Davis (Mother), Grandparents and one brother, Glen Dale Hayes. A celebration of his life will be 1:00 PM Monday, January 10, 2022, in Sanders Funeral Home with Chris Arlando Mitchell officiating. Please celebrate the life of Melvin by visiting www.sandersfuneralhome.com. A webcast of the services will be available as well as our online guest book.
