Shirley Alice Coburn

February 15, 1926 - January 22, 2022

Shirley Coburn, 95, of Lubbock, Texas passed away January 22, 2022. Shirley Alice was born February 15, 1926 in Franklin Township, NJ to Harry and Hilda Kaye. Her parents provided her with a very rich childhood. They sent her to summer camp, she became an equestrian, she was a talented dancer, and they encouraged her to attend college. She was the first Jewish female to be admitted to Finch college in New York City where she studied and received her degree in fashion design. She married Herschel Coburn on August 21, 1949. Our mother, Shirley, was beautiful inside and out. She was intelligent, elegant, and graceful. She was also strong and independent and she persevered through many obstacles. Our mom was very stoic and she never wanted us to know she was in pain. She always protected us and provided us with a happy childhood. Above all, she was a devoted wife and mother and she was selfless. She loved all of her grandchildren equally and never showed favoritism. She was always there for us when we needed her. Her grandchildren were her joy and her love for them, and for us, was unconditional. She was our role model for motherhood! We always admired our mother's beauty and her sense of fashion. She would walk into a room and all heads would turn. She was stunning! We have many fond memories of our mother. The three of us were always very close and connected. She never missed a dance performance regardless of the distance, and she attended all of the choir concerts and drama productions. She was always so very proud of us! When she was a teenager she decided to make her bedroom modern. She found a saw and started sawing off the top of her bed posts. Her dad, our grandpa Harry, heard the noise and when he walked into her room he asked her "Shirley, what are you doing?" She told him and he said "let me help you!" So they sawed off the bed posts together. She was the apple of his eye! We feel very fortunate and grateful to have had such a wonderful mother. We love you mom and we will miss you forever. Loved ones include daughters, Janice Pixley and Deborah Coburn Stern; grandchildren, Aaron Pixley, Rebecca Stern, Jedediah Pixley and Joanna Festa; great-grandchildren Josephine Pixley and Matilda Pixley. Preceded in death by Herschel Coburn (Spouse), her parents, Harry and Hilda Kay, brothers, Bernard Kaye and Alfred Kaye. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2022 in City of Lubbock Cemetery with Reverend Elizabeth Abraham officiating.
