Carroll March Powell

Carroll March Powell, 96, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023, in Lubbock, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, June 26, 2023 at Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church in Abilene, Texas with Father Doug Thomas officiating. Carroll Reiley March was born on December 20, 1926, to Brigadier General Francis Andrew March III and Josephine Reiley March in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. She was the middle child of three children. Carroll attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C and graduated from Stephens Junior College in Columbia, Missouri. She married Leroy Earle Powell on March 2, 1945, in Clay County, Arkansas. They were married 68 years and will be reunited once again eternally. She was a dutiful Air Force Officer Wife, living in numerous states and in Japan. After her husband retired in 1970 from the service, she made the family home in Abilene, Texas being the doting mother to Leroy Jr., Katharine, Josephine, and Rebecca. Carroll was a generous person who volunteered her time with the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Heavenly Rest Altar Guild and Thrift House. She loved playing Bridge at the Abilene Women's Club. Being a true lady, Carroll followed the rules of etiquette and had a purse and shoes to match her stylish garments. She was known as Granny to her 10 grandchildren who loved getting to play with the treasures she would find at Thrift House. Carroll was a one-of-a-kind mother and granny who will be missed dearly. Preceding Carroll in death are her parents, Francis A. III and Josephine March; her husband, Lt. Col. Leroy E. Powell; brother, Francis A. March IV; and sister, Joanna Mayer. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Leroy Powell Jr. and wife Candace of Cypress, CA, Katharine Yokley and husband Michael of Arlington, TX, Josephine Powell and husband Michael Buechter of Ruidoso, NM, and Rebecca Cottrell and husband Rodney of Ropesville, TX; her grandchildren, Jesse Yokley and Alexandria, Daisy Yokley, Matthew Powell and Lyra, Andrew Powell and Maiko, Cole Yokley and Shawna, Jake Cottrell and Rachel, Michael Powell and Melody, Charlotte Crawford and Andrew, Allison Cottrell, and Trent Cottrell; her great-grandchildren; and nieces & nephews. Carroll's family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Heartland House in Lubbock and comforting team of Beyond Faith Hospice in Lubbock for their outstanding comfort and care of our Mother and Granny.
