Colleen Woodson Boyd

Colleen Woodson Boyd, a loving wife, mother, sister, and Mema, passed away on August 24, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas at the age of 86. Colleen was born on April 11, 1940, in Temple, Texas, the daughter of Dr. Burbank Palmer Woodson and Marie Porter Woodson. She is survived by her cherished husband of 62 years, Dick; her son, Cullen, and his wife DelRonda; her daughter, Amy; her sister, Pat; her grandchildren, Nathaniel, Cori, and Andrew; and numerous nieces and nephews. Colleen also leaves behind Misty, the family's beloved yellow lab. Colleen spent most of her childhood in Austin, Texas, which remained an important part of her life story. Growing up, she spent precious time on her grandparents' farm where she learned to ride horses, milk cows, and churn butter. She spent summers at Camp Waldemar in Hunt, Texas and later returned to Hunt during college to counsel and teach swimming lessons at Camp Mystic. Colleen attended Austin Public Schools, and it was in the seventh grade at University Junior High that she met her husband-to-be, Richard (Dick) Boyd. The couple delayed dating until they reached the legal driving age in Texas of fourteen. Colleen graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1958. A member of the high school tennis team, she was chosen Sophomore Class Favorite and was nominated for Homecoming Queen and Valentine Sweetheart, as well as twice for Beauty Revue. She maintained and cherished her childhood friendships throughout her adult life and carried with her especially fond memories of the "carpool girls." Colleen attended Texas Tech University where she was a member of the Dolphinettes swimming team and treasurer of Angel Flight. She was a 1961 Austin Debutante, escorted by her brother Jim. Colleen married her Austin sweetheart, Ensign Richard E. (Dick) Boyd, on November 17, 1963, at the Presbyterian Seminary Chapel in Austin. Immediately following their wedding and reception, the newlyweds headed to San Diego, California, for Dick's assignment to the USS Sumner County. After two afloat assignments on the West Coast, the couple relocated to Dallas, Texas, and returned to civilian life. In Dallas, the Boyd family grew by two with the births of Richard Cullen and, later, Amy Lea. Motherhood naturally suited Colleen's sweet and giving spirit, and she devoted herself to Cullen and Amy, loving, encouraging, and supporting them throughout their lives. Transfers and other changes later took the family to Fort Lauderdale, back to Dallas, then to Saginaw, Michigan, Houston, and finally Lubbock, where Colleen and Dick have happily lived since 1980. Happy times for Colleen were any time she could be of service to others; never one to ask, but always asking, what could she do. Completely unselfish, she lived to help others. And, yes, she loved being with family most of all, whether on a frequent trip to Colorado, sailing in the British Virgin Islands, visiting her grandson in Europe, or simply being at home with the ones she loved. Colleen lived fully in the present moment without effort. With her natural joy, warmth, and positivity, life was great! A memorial service to honor Colleen's beautiful soul will be held at Hyde Chapel on the grounds of the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado, on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception and luncheon.
