Elaine Perrin

Lois Elaine Perrin died peacefully surrounded by family at home in Lubbock on August 16, 2012. She was born October 27, 1928 in Dallas Texas, the first child of Landon Douglas and Lois Mae Wythe. Mrs. Perrin lived in Lubbock more than 50 years and exercised a quiet but significant influence on the community through her teaching at Lubbock Christian University, her service at the Vandelia Church of Christ, and her volunteer efforts with numerous charitable endeavors. Mrs. Perrin grew up on a ranch outside of Granbury, Texas and graduated from Granbury High School. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas where she met and married Lester Ray Perrin, who predeceased her in 2006. She obtained her M.A. in English from Texas Tech. Her younger brother, L.D. Wythe, Jr., predeceased her in 1985. Elaine Perrin was a teacher and one of the first of a generation of women who worked, kept their homes, and reared their children with grace and dignity, all without complaint. After teaching at Midway High School, a consolidated school between Henrietta and Jacksboro, Texas, she moved with her husband and family to Lubbock in 1959 to become, for a time, the librarian of Lubbock Christian University. She eventually became a member of the English faculty at LCU and taught English courses, including Freshman English, Children's Literature, and Modern American Literature to students until her retirement in 1995. She was honored with the F.W. Mattox award at LCU for excellence in teaching. Elaine Perrin's life was defined by faith, family, and service. She was the daughter of the former Lois Mae Young, one of the 13 children of F.L. Young, a pioneer preacher in north Texas in the early 1900's for the Churches of Christ. She worshiped at the Vandelia Church of Christ from 1959 with her husband and family members until the time of her death. She prayed, taught Bible classes, prepared too many casseroles to be counted, graciously entertained the well known and the not-so-well known in her home, visited the sick, fed the hungry, taught children and adults (into her 80's), and was a role model for generations of young women. Mrs. Perrin is survived by her 5 children: Doug Perrin of Sante Fe, New Mexico; Emily Perrin Rider, David Perrin, and Tim Perrin all of Lubbock; and Mark Perrin of Dallas; their spouses, Dana Perrin, Dawn Perrin, Lucy Perrin and Becky Perrin, all of whom loved her dearly; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at the Vandelia Church of Christ to celebrate the remarkable life of this good woman on Saturday, August 25 at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Vandelia Church of Christ or Lubbock Christian University Presidential Fund are encouraged.
