Nona

Nona Marie Pevehouse Burgamy, born in Lubbock, Texas on August 3, 1920, passed on March 9, 2021, at the age of 100. She was married to Estes Burgamy in 1938, who preceded her in death as did her parents, William and Myrtle Pevehouse, and her son, David Burgamy. She is survived by her children, Sherry Burgamy, Michael Burgamy and his wife, Charlene, Sue Bennett, Beth Burgamy and her husband John, and Julie Burgamy, her grandchildren Aaron Burgamy and his wife Brooke, Sarah Burgamy, Beau Bennett, Shane Bennett, Brooke Smith, Nicholas Zakrasek and his wife Elissa, Rachel Zakrasek and Bria Burgamy and great grandchildren, Ella Burgamy and Landon and Mia Zakrasek. A memorial service and celebration of Nona's remarkable life will be planned for a future time. Nona's lifetime commitment to education leads the family to ask that any donations in her honor be given to organizations dedicated to helping students. Earning her Master's Degree in English while still caring for her young children, Nona went on to teach English for over 25 years at Texas Tech University and at Frenship Middle School. After her mother, Myrtle Cone Pevehouse passed on in 1995, Nona ran the family cotton farm and its rental properties until she was 98. She loved spending summers in the high country of the Colorado mountains in the Gunnison National Forest near Taylor Reservoir, camping with family. At home, she could most commonly be found simultaneously reading and knitting, both activities in which she was unusually proficient from a lifetime of practice. During her children's high school years at Frenship High School, she attended their many sports events and was often seen sitting in the stands, knitting a beautiful afghan or sweater. Her home was always full of books, all of which she could discuss in depth. Her knitting, particularly her afghans and baby blankets, caps, booties, and sweaters, were regular entries at the South Plains Fair over many years where they won numerous blue ribbons. She and Estes always had a big vegetable garden and Nona canned, froze, and preserved all kinds of produce. They grew Concord grapes and had many pecan trees and Nona preserved grape juice and made pecan pies, besides always cooking dinner for her family every evening. At family gatherings she would preside over the array of relatives from her favorite spot in the corner of her kitchen, with a completed New York Times crossword puzzle serving as a hot pad for a skillet of freshly baked cornbread. Her connection to the cotton farm on which she lived for most of her life was deep. The flat land and big sky of West Texas were where she felt most at home. After her long career as a teacher at Texas Tech University and Frenship Middle School, she was especially pleased to welcome the new Terra Vista Middle School to her cotton farm.
