Tom Black

Thomas Koeninger Black passed away on April 23, 2026, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of determination, independence, and self-made success. Born on October 19, 1936, to Monroe and Beatrice Black, Tom was raised in Paradise, Texas, where he developed the grit, work ethic, and independence that would define his life. Gifted with a sharp mind and relentless drive, he graduated from Texas A&M University with an engineering degree, earning that degree in fewer than three years-an early reflection of the ambition and discipline that shaped his path. Tom began his career at General Dynamics before taking an exciting opportunity with Scientific-Atlanta. In time, Wise County called him home, where he purchased White's Auto and Decatur Home Furnishings on the square. Those ventures marked the beginning of a lifetime defined by bold decisions, keen business instinct, and an unwavering commitment to doing things his own way. Over the decades that followed, Tom pursued investing with the same sharp focus and determination he brought to everything in life. He remained actively engaged in managing his investments until the very end. Business was not simply what he did-it was what energized him. He also enjoyed the challenge of a good poker game, where his sharp mind and competitive spirit were always on full display. Tom lived by his own code, built what he set out to build, and left a legacy of strength, perseverance, and independence that will endure through the family he leaves behind.He is survived by his son, Scott Black and wife Christy; his daughter, Lori Black Manning and husband Steve; his brother, Edward Lee Black; grandchildren Stephen Manning and wife Emily, William Manning and husband Ruben, Walker Black, Elizabeth Black, and Emma Black; great-grandchildren Sloane Manning and S.J. Manning; and nephews Dennis Black, Kirt Black, and Karl Black. His life was one of vision, discipline, and conviction. He built his life on his own terms and leaves behind a legacy that will carry his name forward for generations. Tom will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Paradise, Texas.
